FAQ'S

    • Are Bullmastiffs good house dogs?

Bullmastiffs are very good housedogs. They are tolerant with children
and learn to manage their great size.

    • What about training?

It is a good idea to take your puppy to a socialization class offered by
a local all breed club or Humane Society and get them used to meeting
      other people and dogs.

    • What type of collar should be used for training?

A good chain collar is a must for obedience or leash work. The neck of
the Bullmastiff is very muscular. Remember though, remove that collar
if you are not going to be around for even a few minutes!

    • Does a Bullmastiff need much exercise?

To be healthy, a dog needs exercise. A Bullmastiff should have a
fenced area where it can exercise. They enjoy daily walks but remember
a growing Bullmastiff should not enter into any type of activity that
      overly stresses its joints.

    • When should training start?

Take control immediately. Puppies are very eager to please, and learn
quickly. High intelligence is sometimes confused with stubbornness. Don’t
be fooled. Once a Bullmastiff learns, it is retained. Be sure the pup
knows what is expected and is not confused - then insist on obedient
behavior. DON’T FORGET LOVE AND PLAYTIME!

    • How do I pick out a puppy?

    • Evaluate your lifestyle. Discuss this with the breeder.
The breeder will have the best knowledge of the various personalities
of the puppies. Some breeders do temperament testing on the litter,
this is one way of determining traits but not mandatory. Visit with
the breeder and try to see the parents of the litter. Discuss with
the breeder their health history and ask about any testing that has
been done..(hip and elbow certification ect.)

    • What about hip and elbow dysplasia?

    • Hip and elbow dysplasia have a genetic factor. There is also an
environmental and nutritional factor that enters into the big picture.
Dysplasia occurs in most large breeds. Breeding stock can be x-rayed
and the hip and elbow structure evaluated and graded by a panel of
veterinarians and OFA numbers given, but not before two years of age.
If a pup is being considered for show or breeding, it can be checked
for the more severe forms of dysplasia at an earlier age.
